About University of York

York is a contemporary, student-friendly city, renowned for its rich history and heritage.

Regularly voted the ‘best place to live in the UK’. With a population of 200,000, it’s a buzzing city that's small enough to cycle and walk around. The city is ideally situated to explore the stunning scenery of Yorkshire, the part of the UK where York resides, and it has great transport networks that connect you with the major cities of the UK.

With a wide array of shops, museums, festivals, sporting and cultural activities, restaurants and cafes it’s big enough to feel lively, but small enough to be friendly.

When you come to the University you’ll be assigned to one of ten colleges. Each college has its own history and character, but they all provide the same services and opportunities. Your college is your foundation for getting involved in campus life and a gateway to exploring the wider university community.

“York is a high-performing, research intensive Russell Group university and one of the world’s premier institutions for inspirational and life-changing research.

Our focus on teaching and research excellence has resulted in consistently high rankings in the UK and a first-class reputation across the globe. In the most recent UK Research Excellence Framework (Times Higher Education, REF 2021) York was ranked 10th for research impact (excluding institutions which have submitted fewer than four units of assessment).

Eight of the University’s academic departments were ranked in the top five for their subject while 12 were in the top ten in terms of research impact. We believe passionately in delivering research-led teaching to help students develop skills needed for success in a competitive global workplace.”

In Times Higher Education World University Rankings (2022), we ranked 24th in the UK and 18th overall in the Complete University Guide 2022.

In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 we are in the world top 100 for Arts and Humanities, top 150 for Social Sciences and top 200 for international outlook.”

What their Students Say

“I chose York generally for five reasons. Firstly, the University of York is a member of the Russell Group and well-renowned for its ranking among other universities in the UK.

Secondly, the course I wanted to study (English in Education) was not an option in many other universities; plus, this course is well-known for its high quality teaching.

Thirdly, I was attracted by the really high index of students’ satisfaction towards the University, which shows York really cares about students’ experiences on campus, regarding academic study and daily life.

York was also highly recommended by my teachers as well as some relatives who had studied in York.

Finally, I chose York because of its good reputation for safety, security and scenery.”

“The teaching team here is excellent. First of all, the teachers pay great attention to the students’ opinions. They patiently answer questions in lectures, seminars and workshops.

Secondly, they like to listen to students’ feedback on the course. They hope to continuously improve the teaching quality and provide a better learning experience for students.

At the end of the semester, teachers will collect students’ feedback on each module and have face-to-face communication with some too.”
